Nursing graduate chosen as hospital employee of the year

Bree Walker first developed a passion for paediatric health around 15 years ago, during a clinical placement for her nursing degree at CQUniversity.

Now that passion has been repaid through her selection as ‘Employee of the Year’ at Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service.

During a gala CQ Health Awards presentation event, CQHHS announced that Bree is renowned for ‘going beyond the call of duty to help others and to uphold our core values of care, commitment, integrity and respect’.

The mother of four says she ‘really loves’ her core role as a Paediatric Nurse Educator and her one-day-a-week commitment as a clinical nurse.

“The award was a nice surprise but it’s the amazing people who surround me that help me do my job well,” Bree says.

CQHHS Chief Executive Steve Williamson said health workers were caring people by nature and did not enter their chosen profession for public accolades, but it was essential they felt valued for their contribution to the community.

“These annual awards are a small way of us saying a big ‘thank-you’ to our wonderful staff for their dedication and commitment to providing top-class health care to Central Queenslanders,” he said.

“We received almost 200 nominations in 2017’s awards, which is a great indication of the pride our staff have in their teams and each other.”
