The WA Government boosted support for Western Australia’s LGBTI community, ahead of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey.
Mental health services for LGBTI communities have been increased to support people who may be experiencing harm, discrimination or distress during the survey period.
The WA AIDS Council has been provided $30,000 to deliver increased mental health awareness and support to those who need it, and an extra $30,000 has been provided to Living Proud to undertake health promotion and training specifically for LGBTI people.
The Government will also provide $250,000 in suicide prevention training grants for community organisations.
The grants provide financial support to initiatives that help build resilience and other protective factors against the risk of suicide within their own communities.
This follows the establishment of a new two-year $282,000 pilot project earlier in 2017, to help improve mental health and wellbeing, and prevent suicide among LGBTI youth in regional areas.
