Lismore City Council is looking for people to join its Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Group and is encouraging people to apply before the 24 November 2017 deadline.
Council’s Partnering and Community Engagement Officer Catherine Rosenbaum said they are looking for passionate community members to join the new group from February 2018.
“We’re looking for people who can demonstrate a strong understanding or passion for improving the lives of people living with disability,” Catherine said.
“The Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Group has a very important role to play as we begin delivering on the four-year Disability Inclusion Action Plan. It is a fun and challenging role, and we encourage anyone interested who would like to advocate for those with disability to apply.”
Jenny London, a manager with Lismore-based disability service provider RED Inc, has been a member of the group for more than five years and encourages others to nominate.
“It is wonderful to be a voice for people with disability and to guide Council to help improve access and inclusion for all members of our community,” Jenny said.
“The change I have seen in just five years in the thinking of Councillors and staff is amazing, and disability access and inclusion is becoming commonplace when people think about urban infrastructure and city amenities. Being there to help our fabulous and diverse city become even more accessible for all members of the community is incredibly rewarding, and you get to meet some extraordinary people along the way.”
The group has recently been renamed from the Access and Inclusion Committee and from 2018 will have a slightly different focus. Objectives for the new group are to:
- provide advice on the implementation of Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2020;
- provide input and advice to Council relating to the strategies in the Imagine Lismore Community Strategic Plan concerning disability access and inclusion; and
- assist Council with the development of any subsequent disability inclusion action plans.
Commencing in February 2018, the Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Group will meet every second month during business hours in the Lismore CBD. Membership is open to anyone 18 years and over who lives, works or studies in the Lismore Local Government Area.
To apply, please compete the online nomination form at www.lismore.nsw.gov.au (on the ‘Accessibility’ webpage under ‘Recreation & Community’).
If you require assistance completing the form phone Catherine Rosenbaum on 1300 87 83 87. Nominations close on Friday, 24 November 2017.
